10 Questions to Ask Before You Hire a Dispatch Service

Choose a dispatcher with confidence by asking these questions first.

10 Questions to Ask Before You Hire a Dispatch Service

Pricing and contract

  • How are you paid: percentage, flat fee or both?
  • Are there setup, software or admin fees?
  • Is there a contract, and what are the cancellation terms?

Service and communication

  • Will I have a dedicated dispatcher?
  • How quickly do you respond, and when are you available?
  • How do you handle problems, delays and detention?

Experience and fit

  • Do you work with my equipment type and lanes?
  • Which brokers and load boards do you use?
  • Can you share references from other carriers?
  • How do you report results and settlements?

Trust your instincts

A good dispatcher answers clearly, explains fees openly and respects that you make the final decision on every load.

Red flags to watch for

  • Promises of guaranteed income or unrealistic rates.
  • Pressure to sign a long contract immediately.
  • Vague answers about fees and what is included.
  • No way to contact a real person when something goes wrong.

Start small

If possible, begin with a trial period or a short agreement. After a few weeks you will see how responsive the dispatcher is, what freight they find and whether the numbers work for your truck.
