Pricing and contract
- How are you paid: percentage, flat fee or both?
- Are there setup, software or admin fees?
- Is there a contract, and what are the cancellation terms?
Service and communication
- Will I have a dedicated dispatcher?
- How quickly do you respond, and when are you available?
- How do you handle problems, delays and detention?
Experience and fit
- Do you work with my equipment type and lanes?
- Which brokers and load boards do you use?
- Can you share references from other carriers?
- How do you report results and settlements?
Trust your instincts
A good dispatcher answers clearly, explains fees openly and respects that you make the final decision on every load.
Red flags to watch for
- Promises of guaranteed income or unrealistic rates.
- Pressure to sign a long contract immediately.
- Vague answers about fees and what is included.
- No way to contact a real person when something goes wrong.
Start small
If possible, begin with a trial period or a short agreement. After a few weeks you will see how responsive the dispatcher is, what freight they find and whether the numbers work for your truck.
