WordPress Performance Audit: How to Score 90+ on PageSpeed Insights

WordPress development workspace

A WordPress performance audit is a systematic review of every factor slowing your site down. Most sites scoring below 70 on PageSpeed Insights have three to five fixable issues causing the majority of the slowdown. This guide covers how to identify and fix each one.

WordPress performance audit process checklist

Step 1: Establish Your Baseline

Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights, GTmetrix, and WebPageTest. Record your current LCP, FID/INP, CLS, Total Blocking Time, and Time to First Byte. These numbers are your starting point. Run tests on mobile and desktop separately — mobile performance is what Google measures for ranking.

Step 2: Fix Time to First Byte (TTFB)

TTFB above 600ms usually means your hosting is undersized for your traffic. If you are on shared hosting, upgrade to managed WordPress hosting (Kinsta, WP Engine, Cloudways). If you are already on good hosting, check your server response time in GTmetrix’s waterfall chart for PHP or database query bottlenecks.

Step 3: Fix Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)

LCP is the time until your main content image or text block is visible. The most common causes: an unoptimised hero image (should be compressed WebP, under 100KB), a render-blocking script loading before the image, or a missing preconnect hint for a third-party font or script. Add <link rel=”preload”> for your hero image in the theme’s header.php to prioritise it.

Step 4: Fix Total Blocking Time

TBT comes from large JavaScript bundles running on the main thread. Use WP Rocket’s Delay JavaScript Execution feature to defer all non-critical scripts (chat widgets, analytics, marketing pixels) until after the page is interactive. This single fix typically reduces TBT by 50–80 percent.

WordPress performance audit: frequently asked questions

How often should I run a WordPress performance audit?

Run a WordPress performance audit every quarter, and again after any major theme, plugin or hosting change. Regular checks catch slow plugins and oversized images before they hurt rankings and conversions.

Can a WordPress performance audit improve SEO?

Yes. A WordPress performance audit fixes the speed issues behind poor Core Web Vitals, which Google uses as a ranking signal. Faster pages also lower bounce rates and lift conversions.
